Independent Living Co-ordinators

Your Independent Living Coordinator (ILC) is your main point of contact within the scheme. Their role is to maintain contact and coordinate access to other services if required.

The level of contact will depend on your needs and preferences. Some tenants are contacted weekly, while others may have less frequent contact, such as fortnightly, monthly or at longer intervals. The frequency of contact is agreed with each tenant and reviewed over time.

What ILCs do:

  • Maintain contact with tenants, as agreed
  • Coordinate access to other services such as social care, health professionals or charities
  • Assist with activities in communal areas
  • Assist with communication involving family members, where appropriate
  • Carry out regular health and safety checks of schemes and ensure actions are followed up

Independent Living Coordinators do not provide personal care or medical support.

Housing and safety responsibilities

ILCs support the day-to-day running of schemes and help keep them safe and well maintained. They:

  • Visit schemes regularly (typically weekly)
  • Report and follow up repairs in communal areas and, where needed, in individual homes
  • Carry out estate walkabouts with the Property Repairs Service
  • Identify and report tenancy concerns to Housing Officers
  • Proactively identify safeguarding concerns
  • Support Lifeline use, including demonstrating equipment, basic checks, arranging replacements and responding to emergencies if no other responder is available

Working across schemes

ILCs support more than one scheme (around five or six). They work across different locations, including schemes and council offices, where they manage records, coordinate support and arrange activities.

To ensure continuity, ILCs are not routinely rotated between schemes. Changes usually only happen where staff leave or move to other roles. While we understand that continuity is important, the level of service provided will remain consistent.

Who else supports you

Independent Living Schemes are supported by a wider housing team.

  • Housing Officers: manage tenancies, including breaches, transfers, succession, and support new tenants
  • ASB Officers: investigate reports of anti-social behaviour
  • Other staff: Income Officers, Housing Managers, Tenancy Support Officers depending on circumstances
