Communal Facilities at Independent Living Schemes

Most Independent Living Schemes include shared spaces for tenants to enjoy. Communal areas provide opportunities to socialise, take part in activities, or simply spend time outside your home. Use and availability of these spaces can vary between schemes.

Community Rooms

Community rooms are available for tenants to hold social activities or meet with friends and neighbours. Independent Living Coordinators (ILCs) help organise activities, either formally through a tenants’ committee or informally. ILCs are responsible for managing the use of community rooms at the schemes.

Laundry Facilities

Tenants have exclusive use of laundry facilities at their scheme. To keep them running smoothly, we encourage tenants to:

  • Remove washing promptly after the cycle finishes
  • Clean soap dispenser drawers after use
  • Only use one machine per tenant to allow others to do their washing

Communal drying areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once your washing is dry, please remove it so others can use the space.

Guest Bedrooms

Some schemes have guest bedrooms available for short-term use by friends and relatives. A small fee applies for this service. Bookings and payments can be made via the Contact Centre by calling (01788) 533375.

Communal Heating

The schemes at Tanser Court, Albert Square and Lesley Souter House have communal heating and hot water systems. Tenants at these schemes pay a fixed service charge for these utilities, and this charge cannot be reduced or refunded.

Parking

Parking at Independent Living Schemes operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The council does not allocate spaces or mediate disputes. Tenants and visitors should:

  • Ensure emergency vehicles can access the site
  • Reserve disabled parking spaces for those with a valid need

Gardens

Communal gardens are maintained by the council. Tenants are responsible for private gardens attached to their home, in line with tenancy agreement standards. Grit bins are provided and replenished by the council, but tenants are responsible for gritting paths themselves.
