Organised by Rugby Visitor Centre, the borough's Heritage Open Days celebration runs from 11 September to 20 September, with a host of historic and iconic buildings opening to the public to offer a rare chance to peek behind the scenes.

Tours of the CEMEX Rugby Cement plant - including a trip to the top of the plant's tower - take place on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September.
Five tours take place, but with limited spaces available, book early to avoid missing out.

The Rugby Gin Distillery opens its doors for tours on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 September, where visitors can find out how the distillery makes Rugby Gin - and taste the company's range of tipples.

The Mayor of Rugby, Cllr Nooria Sayani, welcomes visitors to the Town Hall on Monday 14 September, with a cup of tea and a talk in the Mayor's Parlour following a tour of the council chamber.

A 1960s Midland Red bus promises a sentimental journey on Wednesday 16 September, with bus trips leaving from Rugby Visitor Centre and heading to Clifton-upon-Dunsmore for a short tour of St Mary's Church, followed by refreshments.

And St Andrew's Church hosts a hat-trick of Heritage Open Days events, with visitors invited to discover the stories behind the church's stained glass windows during Walk The Windows (tours taking place on Saturday 12, Monday 14, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September).

The church gives visitors a rare opportunity to climb the steep spiral stairs to the top of the tower (tours taking place on the morning of Saturday 12 September), while an exhibition of vestments - robes and garments worn by religious leaders - runs at St Andrew's Church from Saturday 12 to Sunday 20 September.

Heritage Open Days also includes a range of heritage walks led by the visitor centre's team of volunteer guides, tours of Rugby School and its gardens, a tour of Coombe Abbey, and the chance to peek behind the scenes at Rugby Theatre.

Cllr Maggie O'Rourke, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for partnerships, health and wellbeing, said: "Rugby's history has so many stories to tell and Heritage Open Days offers plenty of opportunities to discover more about the history on our doorsteps.

"Thanks to the support of so many organisations, this year's programme includes a host of free events across the borough and beyond, but with limited places available at many events, it's best to book early."

Cllr Neil Sandison, Rugby Borough Council's Liberal Democrat group spokesperson for partnerships, health and wellbeing, said: "So much of Rugby's history goes unnoticed in our day-to-day lives and the Heritage Open Days programme provides an insight into that history and heritage of our borough."
