Contamination

When bins contain things which shouldn’t be in there, this is classed as contamination.

Here is a handy guide to common types of contamination for each type of bin. For more details on how to properly dispose of any of these items, see our recycling directory.

General waste (black bin)

• Garden waste
• Building waste/rubble
• Building waste/batteries
• Hazardous waste (chemicals, paint etc.)

Recycling (blue bin)

• Any general waste (see above)
• Food
• Crisp packets
• Tissue and kitchen roll
• Textiles and shoes
• Polystyrene
• Hard plastics
• Garden waste
• Bagged rubbish

Garden waste (green bin)

• An general waste (see above)
• Any recyclable waste (see above)
• Soil or turf
• Plastic sacks or bags

Our crews check your bins before they are emptied; if they are found to contain the wrong items your bin will not be collected. The collection crew will leave a tag on your bin showing you the type of contamination they have seen. Your bin will then be collected on the next round if our crew can see that you have removed the contamination.

Rugby Borough Council reserves the right to remove residents’ recycling and garden waste bins if they are persistently contaminated.
