What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches are insects which can live in warm, damp environments such as kitchens, bathrooms or behind appliances.
Cockroaches are nocturnal and can spread quickly if not treated.
How do I know if I have cockroaches?
Common signs include:
- seeing live cockroaches, usually at night
- droppings which look like small black specks or coffee grounds
- unpleasant, musty odour
- shed skins or egg cases in hidden areas

Not necessarily. While food and waste can attract cockroaches, infestations can occur in any property.
Cockroaches infestations are usually due to access points, warmth and moisture, rather than cleanliness.
How do cockroaches get into homes?
Cockroaches can enter properties through:
- cracks and gaps in walls or floors
- pipework and drainage systems
- luggage following a stay in a hotel, bed and breakfast or mobile home
- shared walls or adjoining properties, such as flats, terraces or multi-occupancy buildings
- warm, damp areas which cockroaches once inside, such as behind freezers, fridges and under sinks
Can I treat cockroaches myself?
Some minor infestations may be treated using shop-bought products, but cockroaches can be difficult to remove completely as the insects hide in hard-to-reach places.
Professional treatment may be required for larger and/or persistent infestations.
Will one treatment visit solve the problem?
No - cockroach infestations can be persistent and more than one visit will be required to fully control the problem.
Do I need to prepare my home before treatment?
You may be asked to complete simple preparation steps, such as:
- cleaning surfaces and removing food debris
- clearing access to cupboards and appliances
- reducing clutter in affected areas
