Early intervention to prevent homelessness

The council aims to prevent homelessness by offering help and support before a housing problem becomes a crisis.

We work with tenants, landlords and families when homelessness becomes a risk, particularly in the private rented sector.

We can offer:

  • early advice and tailored housing support
  • help to resolve housing issues before eviction takes place
  • mediation and engagement with landlords
  • support with affordability, rent arrears and tenancy sustainment
  • access to prevention grants and wider support services

If you're a tenant worried about your housing or a landlord concerned about a tenancy, please contact us as soon as possible so we can explore all options available to prevent your problem becoming a crisis.

Information for landlords

The Renters' Rights Act requires landlords to provide tenants with a prescribed information sheet setting out the tenants' rights and responsibilities.

The information sheet, a key requirement of the legislation, aims to ensure tenants have all the information required at the start of a tenancy.

What landlords need to know

  • a standardised document - Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 - must be issued to tenants
  • the document must outline the tenant's rights, the landlord's responsibilities and key legal protections
  • information sheets must be issued to existing tenants if the information has not already been provided
  • information sheets must be issued to tenants by 31 May 2026
  • failure to comply with the requirement may result in enforcement action and a financial penalty of up to £7,000

We encourage all landlords to familiarise themselves with the legislation and ensure compliance before 31 May 2026.
