Description
The pleasant, historical village of Dunchurch is situated just south of the town of Rugby but still within the Borough of Rugby. Rugby Borough Council's Parks and Cemeteries department maintain several sites in the village including Dunchurch Heath, the 2.45 acre (1 hectare) village green which the Borough Council has looked after since 1971.
The plaque on the heath is in memory of five airmen who were killed there during the second world war, when their plane crashed on the night of the 14th October 1944.
Also in Dunchurch is the old inn where Robert Catesby and the gunpowder plotters met on the 5th November 1605, then known as the Lion Inn. They were waiting to hear of news from Guy Fawkes in London, and upon his arrest it was here that the conspirators planned the rebellion that would lead to their defeat three days later. The inn is now called ""Guy Fawkes House"" to commemorate these events.
