Safe and well visits from Warwickshire Fire Service

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is taking proactive steps to raise awareness about fire safety in the home.

With winter here and the cooler weather setting in, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is taking proactive steps to raise awareness about fire safety in the home and the importance of conducting safe and well checks for our most vulnerable community members.

Every year, fires pose a significant risk to lives and property, especially during transitional seasons when temperature variations can lead to an increased use of heating equipment and potential fire hazards

Whilst there are some steps you can take to reduce the risk of having a fire in your home including:

  • Inspecting Heating Systems: Ensure your heating systems, including furnaces, chimneys, and space heaters, are clean, well-maintained, and in good working condition.

  • Installing Smoke Alarms: Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and test them monthly. Replace batteries at least once a year.

  • Creating Fire Escape Plans: Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family, identify exit routes and a designated meeting place outside.

  • Safe Use of Space Heaters: When using portable electric space heaters, keep them at least three feet away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.

  • Proper Candle Usage: Use candles with caution, never leave them burning unattended, and keep them away from curtains, papers, or any flammable items.

Our most vulnerable community members, including the elderly, disabled, and those with limited mobility, may require some additional support in the form of a Safe and Well visit. The visits are FREE and are carried out by firefighters and community fire safety officers and have helped protect thousands of residents across Warwickshire from the risk of fire in their home.

During the visit they will provide:

  • fire safety advice

  • check that your smoke alarms are working and replace or install new ones if needed

  • advice on preventing slips, trips and falls

  • giving up smoking

  • winter warmth

  • home security

  • hydration and healthy eating

You can apply for a safe and well check by visiting https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/fire-safety-home/apply-safe-well-visit Referrals are also be made by partner agencies or carers. Edmonson Close celebrate

18 of the residents at Edmonson Close held a celebration on 11 Novemeber 2023, throwing a well deserved party for the completion of their lovely mosaic table that is now being used in their communal garden.

The stunning design of the table is inspired by nature, bursting with colour and depictions of birds, bees, the sun, and an array of other animals - made with thousands of tiles it took 4 months from start to finish!

This piece will also be showcased at the Rugby Arts Gallery and Museum.

Tenants Panel Meeting

We would like to thank those who attended the latest tenant's Panel meeting on 8th November 2023 at the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum. These meetings give us the opportunity to work with tenants to improve our services.

At the latest meeting there was a focus on:

  • reviewing the Tenants Involvement record

  • looking at the Rent Setting presentation

  • taking a closer look at the Tenants Satisfaction Survey

This allowed tenants to have a deeper understanding of RBC’s performance to see how we are doing and give us any thoughts they may have. We had a presentation about the rent setting which helped tenants leave with a deeper understanding of the prices of different types of rent and the costs of Council housing rent, Housing Association rent and Private rent. This found Rugby Borough Council to be the overall cheapest provider in the area.

Our next Tenants Panel meetings will be held at Rugby Museum & Art Gallery on:

7th  February 2024  12:30pm – 2pm

Tips from Rugby Recycles

A friendly reminder from Rugby’s bin collection crews that doing the right thing with your waste helps you and your neighbours and keeps your area clean and safe. Just follow these simple rules:

  • Separate your waste; all recycling should be clean, dry, and loose (not in a bag). Recycling bins with the wrong items in will not be collected. Common mistakes are food waste, plastic bags, and polystyrene. If you are unsure what goes in which bin, check our website www.rugby.gov.uk/whichbin

  • Any waste left by the side of bins will not be collected. If your items are too large, you can take it to the recycling centre at Hunters Lane or book a bulky waste collection.

  • Please do not put batteries in any council bins as these can and do cause fires. This includes vapes and electronic items with batteries such as electric toothbrushes. These items can be recycled at Hunters Lane.

  • Please put your bin out before 7.30am and return it to your own property the same day. Bins must not be left on the pavement or road except on bin days.

You can report missed bins or ask for additional or replacement bins through our website www.rugby.gov.uk/recycling, or by calling the contact centre.

Christmas celebrations

Christmas celebrations took place at 6 of our schemes, with just under 100 residents attending. The celebrations included festive buffets, games, raffles and entertainment. Albert Square had collaborated with the salvation army who led a carol service which the tenants joined in on and raised over £100 for the salvation army. The English Martyrs school in Hillmorton selected 13 students to sing Christmas carols at Pettiver Crescent and Duffy Place. Tenants at 2 schemes also played instruments for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.

This was a great chance for residents to get together and enjoy Christmas and have a positive end to 2023.
