Small society lotteries, promoted for the benefit of a non-commercial organisation such as a charity, must be registered with the council.

The Gambling Act 2005 defines a small society lottery as a lottery where proceeds do not exceed £20,000 for a single draw and aggregated proceeds do not exceed £250,000 in any one year.

Lotteries which exceed the definition of a small society lottery must be licensed by the Gambling Commission.
