Sculptor, painter, engraver, illustrator, draftsman and teacher, Leon Underwood was described as "The precursor of modern sculpture in Britain". Underwood set up the Brook Green School of Painting and Sculpture in Hammersmith, London, in his own studio. His notable students include Henry Moore, Eileen Agar, Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton.
