Carel Weight (1908- 1997) met lifelong friend Ruskin Spear whilst studying at Hammersmith School of Art (1928-30) before moving to Goldsmiths' College (1931-3), where the teaching was more experimental. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and supported artists fleeing Nazi Europe before travelling to Italy as an official War Artist in 1945.  In this peaceful depiction of a towpath, Weight captures the serenity of canals through his earthy and natural colour pallet.
