Improvements to Whitehall Rec
Major tree works took place at Whitehall Recreation Ground in winter 2017, with the removal and replacement of damaged and dying trees.
Following the sudden collapse of a horse chestnut in August 2017, and another during a storm in the spring of 2017, survey work showed that several horse chestnuts at the park were cankerous and unstable, and needed to be removed.
This included all of the horse chestnuts in the recreation ground that face Hillmorton Road on either side of the memorial gates. They were in poor structural condition and were of particular concern given the intensity of public use. Mature chestnuts were planted to replace them and retain the character of the recreation ground in this area.
Two lime trees were also removed to prevent further damage to the bandstand.
