Everything you need to know about photo ID for the May 2023 local elections
The Government has introduced the requirement to show a valid form of photographic ID in order to vote at a polling station.
If you intend to vote at a polling station at the local elections on Thursday 4 May, you'll need to produce a valid form of photo ID in order to receive a ballot paper.
The Electoral Commission has produced Voter ID - Your Guide to explain which forms of photo ID can you use to vote at a polling station.
The guide also explains how to apply for a free voter ID document, called a Voter Authority Certificate, if you need one.
Voter ID - Your Guide has been translated into a number of languages by the Electoral Commission, which has also published guides tailored for groups more likely to need support in meeting the requirement to produce voter ID.
You can download accessible PDF versions of Voter ID - Your Guide currently available from the links below or read the guide on our website.
