Rugby Borough Council purchased this site in 1938 for £1500.
The area was designated as common land under the Enclosures Act in the 17th century and adjacent Bilton allotments are still protected and operated by the Charities Commission.
Today the 10.9 acre site (4.4 hectares) is mainly used as a sporting facility and play area for young people.
The recreation ground is a designated Queen Elizabeth II Field.
