Founded 1895, opened 1961, enjoyed today.

The BENN Hall is named after George Charles Benn, to commemorate the philanthropy of the Benn family.

In his will of 1894, George Charles Benn left a sum of £6000 to create a building to be used by the people of Rugby.

The Advertiser wrote in 1961: "During the prosperous years of the last century no name was more honoured or blessed in Rugby than that of the Benn family."

George went to Rugby School, and then to Oxford.

He joined his brother, Anthony Staresmore Benn, in running Butlin and Sons Bank, founded in 1792. It ran until 1867 when it was disposed of to Lloyds Bank. George was a solicitor, who after his siblings had died, inherited all of his family's wealth.

The Benn Charity for the poor funded fuel, food, clothing and blankets to be provided annually to the deserving poor of the parish.

The Benn Hall was officially opened on 5 July 1961 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother insisted on fulfilling a promise to open the Benn Hall, despite having suffered a painful injury to her ankle days before.

Arriving by helicopter at the Hillmorton Recreation Ground, she spent part of the visit being pushed in a wheelchair.

After lunch at the Benn Hall however, her ankle had recovered sufficiently and she was able to undertake a short walkabout through the crowds.

She was presented with a rugby ball by the Rugby firm James Gilbert, who made the first rugby ball in the 19th century. She declared her intention to give the ball to Prince Charles, then aged 13, although she was "sorry to say" that her grandson was more interested in soccer.
