Open invitation to attend a meeting for candidates and agents

This is an open invitation to attend a meeting for candidates and agents being held by the Returning Officer, Andrew Gabbitas, in Committee Room 1 of the Town Hall, Rugby starting at 5.30 pm on Tuesday, 6 March 2012.

Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England all out elections will be held on 3rd May to introduce new ward boundaries and ward membership.

At the meeting the Returning Officer will talk about the new warding arrangements and how their introduction will affect certain aspects of the conduct of the elections.

Date of the Verification and Counting of the Votes

Rugby Borough Council Elections - 3 May 2012

As there will be all out elections in May to introduce new electoral arrangements for the Borough the Returning Officer has decided that  the counting  of the votes will start at 9.00 am on Friday 4 May 2012.  

You may be aware that, subject to Parliamentary approval, recent boundary changes will introduce at these elections:

  • A council of 42 members,
  • 13 three member wards
  • 3 one member wards, and
  • a scheme of retirement by thirds.

Therefore, there must all out elections in order to establish the new council and the years in which members will need to retire. To view  the reasons why the  Returning Officer considers this in the best interest of the election, please see the link to the full letter of explanation.

How to be a candidate for an election

so you want to be a councillorTo be a candidate for an election you must be aged 18 or over.

In addition you must also be either on the electoral register, and/or have lived, worked or owned property in the area for at least the past 12 months.
