Car parking charges to change

Night-time revellers who want to spend an evening in the town centre no longer have to pay to park following a review.

Many charges in the town's car parks are being removed after a select group of councillors reviewed the town centre economy.

Some of these changes will take a few weeks to take effect but the evening charge has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Rugby Borough Council is to refresh all of the parking tariffs on its car parks.

The move will see a number of changes including  creating a new £1 for up to two hours parking tariff in North Street, Chestnut Fields, Evreux Way and Little Church Street.

There will also be a new £1 for three hours and £3 all-day parking tariffs in Newbold Road on Saturdays.

There will be 25 per cent reductions for quarterly season tickets and periodic additional discounts for Smile loyalty card holders and participatory businesses

Other changes that will also be introduced will include changing Railway Terrace car park from long stay to short stay and a new single tariff in the John Barford Car Park, which will be open longer in the evenings from April.

Councillor Neil Campbell, Economy, Development and Culture Portfolio holder said: "The borough council is always reviewing the usage and charging for our car parks to ensure that the car parks in or close to the town centre provide the best value for our residents and visitors.

"These changes are in response to a cross party scrutiny review that has been undertaken to look at a variety of ways that Rugby Borough Council is and can continue to support the town centre in these challenging economic times.

"We have listened to many stakeholders and are implementing some of the proposed changes as quickly as we can, because we believe that prompt action will make a difference to our residents, visitors and traders. We have not waited for the formal variation of the evening charges; we have acted straight away to remove this to assist the night time economy.

"I hope that our residents and visitors will appreciate these savings and keep visiting Rugby Town Centre. It is a really great shopping destination with a fantastic variety of High Street names and independent traders."

Councillor Kathryn Lawrence, who chaired the review group, said: "As a council we are constantly reviewing our policies to make sure they offer the best for people in the Rugby area.

"In light of the evidence presented as part of this review  and a desire to keep the town economy vibrant, we have decided to take action which we believe will improve the car-parking experience for all users.

"Having reviewed the situation regarding the night-time economy, we have worked out a suitable alternative to the evening parking charges, which we hope will be fair to all concerned."

The formal public notice regarding the full changes can be viewed soon.
