What is voting by proxy?

Note:
Applications to vote by proxy at this election applied for on grounds of physical incapacity, where that physical incapacity occurred after 5.00 pm on Tuesday,  27th April 2010, must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Town Hall, Evreux Way, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV21 2RR by 5.00 pm on Thursday, 6th May.

Voting by proxy means that someone else will go to your polling station to cast your vote for you.

Not everyone can have a proxy vote. You must have a particular reason for wanting one and it is likely that your application will have to supported (signed) by someone else to say that your reason is a valid one.

You can have a proxy vote: -

  1. If you have a long term illness or you are disabled and cannot get to your polling station. You must get a registered practitioner , a registered nurse or a Christian Science practitioner to sign your form.
  2. If you are registered blind or receive mobility allowance you do not need to have your application signed. but you must give details of your registration or allowance number. If you are in a residential home or sheltered housing, the matron, home care director or warden may support and sign your application.
  3. If you will be away from home because of your or your spouse's work. Your employer or your spouse's employer must support and sign your application. If you or your spouse
    is self-employed, the person supporting your application must be 18 or over, know you and not related to you.
  4. If you are a student attending a course away from home, your application must be supported by someone at the educational institution concerned.
  5. If you are on a short business trip or training course you do not need anyone to sign your form, but the vote will only cover elections on one date.
  6. If you cannot get to your polling station without travelling by sea or air e.g. you may be away on a foreign holiday. Nobody else's signature is needed. You do not need anyone to sign your form, but the vote will only cover elections on one day.
