Rugby and Daventry Crematorium
Plans for new crematorium
Rugby Borough Council and Daventry District Council are working together to develop a new cemetery and crematorium facility on the edge of Rugby, overseen by a Joint Committee of Councillors and officers from both councils. The proposed facility would be located off Ashlawn Road, on the southern edge of Rugby.
The plans follow a Rugby Borough Council study which found that there was both a community need and a viable business case for such a facility. The study showed that burial space in the borough will run out in the next three to five years, and that approximately 70 per cent of funerals are cremations. Attending a cremation at the nearest crematorium to Rugby or Daventry involves a 30 mile round trip.
A planning application for the site was submitted to Rugby Borough Council in September 2011. The application was approved by the council's Planning Committee on 26 September 2012, subject to conditions.
