Role and Function of the Mayor

Mayor Don Williams
The Mayor is elected by the Council annually. The Mayor of Rugby from 20th May 2010 until 20th May 2011 is Councillor Mr Don Williams.

The Mayor and, in his or her absence, the Deputy Mayor, has the following roles and functions:
  • upholding and promoting the purposes of the Constitution, and to interpret the Constitution when necessary;
  • presiding over meetings of the Council so that its business can be carried out efficiently and with regard to the rights of Councillors and the interests of the community;
  • ensuring that the Council meeting is a forum for the debate of matters of concern to the local community and the place at which Councillors who are not on the Cabinet are able to hold the Cabinet to account;
  • promoting public involvement in the Council's activities;
  • being the conscience of the Council;
  • attending civic and ceremonial functions that the Council and he/she determines appropriate

The Deputy Mayor for 2010-11 is Councillor Gwen Hotten.
