Dog Control Service

The council deal with complaints from members of the public about dog fouling, stray dogs, nuisance dogs and dangerous dogs.

Authorised officers (The Dog Warden and Community Safety Wardens) carry out patrols of parks and open spaces and specific areas known to be used by walkers. However some complaints cannot be dealt with by the Dog Warden. You may be asked to contact the appropriate agency (e.g. the Police or RSPCA).

The Dog Warden can give you advice on responsible dog ownership, including routine health care such as worming, de-fleaing, vaccinating your dog, neutering and microchipping.

Any complaints about dogs will be responded to as quickly as possible, but always within 2 working days. The Dog Warden will act in the strictest confidence and keep you informed about what action is being taken.

The aims of the service include:

  • Respond to all complaints as soon as possible but always within 2 working days.
  • Respond to sightings of stray dogs on school premises.
  • Collection of stray secure dogs. The dogs are kept safely for a maximum of seven days for collection by the owner (subject to the payment of a fee). After seven days dogs are then re-homed. Link to further information on kennel fees etc. Promotion of responsible dog ownership through talks to Primary schools and other groups.
  • Enforcement of dog-related legislation and the Dog Control Orders.
  • Promotion of responsible ownership by offering at cost price, a microchipping service.

The Dog Warden will regularly patrol designated areas to ensure the Council legal duties are met. Where practicable dog fouling signs will be placed in appropriate areas within the borough. If you have any questions or complaints, please email the Dog Wardens Service.
